Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 15–25 m tall.

Stems: Bark pale gray, fibrous on trunk, white and smooth above.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate. Blades broadly lanceolate to lanceolate, 10–16 cm long, 1.7–3 cm wide. Apex acuminate. Blades concolorous, glaucous. Margins entire. Petioles 15–22 mm long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 7 in umbels arranged in terminal, paniculate inflorescences, but occasionally axillary and simple, peduncles quadrangular, glaucous, 10–15 mm long, pedicels 1–5 mm long, sometimes absent. buds cylindrical, glaucous, 8–16 mm long, 4–7 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit cylindrical to suburceolate; glaucous; 6–15 mm long; 5–10 mm wide; valves 4; included. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted and occurring sporadically at least on Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi. Not recorded as planted by state forestry.
